A hereditary condition characterized by high levels of "bad" cholesterol (Familial Hypercholesterolemia, or FH) is one of the most common genetic disorders in the Netherlands. If left untreated, it is associated with an increased risk of premature cardiovascular disease. Fortunately, effective treatments are available. Especially when treatment is started early, the long-term consequences are fortunately limited.

From September 2023, Isala will become the LEEFH center hospital in Overijssel. A partnership with the national LEEFH expertise center will give new impetus to the detection and treatment of FH.
"In the coming years, we will be working with LEEFH to do our best to detect people in time," says Sylvia Oosteen, Nurse Specialist in vascular medicine.

Family members of patients who are identified elsewhere in the Netherlands but live near Zwolle are also referred to Isala. Although many people are easy to treat, others require new and less common medications.
Questions about treatment at a young age, the effect on insurance, but also about wanting children and pregnancy are also welcome here.
