Request an umbilical cord care kit

Step-by-step plan

DNA diagnostics via umbilical cord package

Step 1: Start DNA Diagnostics for FH via umbilical cord package

Patient requests umbilical cord package from LEEFH. We send instructions along with it.

Before giving birth, discuss with your midwife, gynecologist, or family doctor (healthcare provider) that you would like DNA testing to be performed on the newborn using umbilical cord blood. Collecting umbilical cord blood is risk-free and painless.

Step 2: Fill out the application form

The healthcare provider and patient complete the application form. The application form consists of a questionnaire for the physician and a questionnaire with informed consent for the patient. With the informed consent, Amsterdam UMC can share your data and results with stichting LEEFH. It is important that both are completed and signed.

Step 3: Blood sampling during delivery

Blood is taken from the newborn via the umbilical cord. Blood is also taken from the mother to check that there are no traces of the mother's DNA in the child's umbilical cord blood.

The blood sample and request form will be sent to Amsterdam UMC (address is on the request form) by the blood collection lab. The requesting healthcare provider will receive the results from Amsterdam UMC.

Step 4: Aftercare and further family research

If a result confirms that FH is hereditary, LEEFH will contact the parents to discuss whether other family members are eligible for cascade screening.
