Starting in September 2023, Tergooi MC will join LEEFH, the National Expertise Center for Genetic Research into Cardiovascular Diseases, as a LEEFH center. This means that Tergooi MC will play a greater role in coordinating family research among patients with familial hypercholesterolemia in the region.

Vascular Medicine Outpatient Clinic

Tergooi MC has had an outpatient clinic for vascular medicine for over five years. Vascular medicine focuses on the health of the heart and blood vessels. Preferably before cardiovascular disease has occurred, but if necessary, also after cardiovascular disease has occurred. The vascular medicine team consists of two vascular physicians and one nursing specialist. They collaborate with medical and nursing specialists/physician assistants from the fields of cardiology, neurology, and vascular surgery. This makes the hospital a "Center of Excellence" in the field of vascular care in the region.

Familial Hypercholesterolemia

One cause of cardiovascular disease can be high cholesterol. This may or may not be caused by a DNA mutation that leads to familial hypercholesterolemia. People with familial hypercholesterolemia have high cholesterol from childhood onwards. High cholesterol can lead to the development of plaque, also known as arteriosclerosis, and cause narrowing of the blood vessels and heart attack. Early detection and treatment of familial hypercholesterolemia can prevent damage to the heart and blood vessels. At the Tergooi MC vascular medicine outpatient clinic, we screen people and family members with FH to determine whether treatment is necessary.

LEEFH center

"We are delighted that Tergooi MC has joined LEEFH as a LEEFH center," says Lonneke Kamer, nurse specialist. "By playing a greater role in coordinating family screening, more people will become aware of high cholesterol and the risks it entails. The medical and nursing specialists at Tergooi MC's Centre of Excellence for Vascular Care will help reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. The aim is to enable as many people as possible to grow old in good health."

If you have high cholesterol, your GP may refer you to the vascular medicine outpatient clinic.
